Chapter 17 Braised Pork Offal
Chapter 17 Braised Pork Offal
"It stinks! I need to change my clothes!" Yang Guilan put the pig offal on the stove and was about to go back to her room.
Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of something at the very back of the stove and turned back. "Mom! These are wontons! What's this? Oh my, they're all filled with meat!" she exclaimed as she saw what was in the stove.
"You bastard! Do you want the whole village to know you're eating meat?!" Xie He was adding firewood to the stove where he was stewing pork bones when he heard his second son's wife's words. He grabbed a fire poker and was about to hit her.
"I'm going to change my clothes, I'm going to change my clothes!"
After saying that, Yang Guilan quickly covered her mouth and ran into the house. If she didn't run, her mother-in-law's stick would come down on her.
Wen Luozhi inspected the pig offal and, after confirming that everything was fine, began the braising process.
First, blanch the pork offal in plenty of water with scallions and ginger. After rinsing it several times, put it in a pot of cold water with scallions, ginger, garlic, dried chili peppers, and other seasonings. Then cover the pot and simmer for about an hour.
Watching Wen Luozhi's actions, Xie He couldn't help but click her tongue in amazement.
This is made with sugar and spices, so even boiled shoe soles would taste delicious! No wonder it's an old sage's method, unlike those mortals who just wash and cook it and eat it!
The bone broth in the big pot had already boiled and was bubbling away, while the aroma of the pork offal in the small pot was growing stronger and stronger.
The aroma drew Xiao Hu, along with Da Ya and Er Ya, to the kitchen. The little guy sniffed around like a puppy.
Upon seeing Wen Luozhi, he rushed over and hugged her legs, stammering, "Little...little auntie smells...smells good."
"I want it, I want it!" He raised his little hand and pointed at the tall stove with a determined look in his eyes.
The aroma is coming from there! Mom says if you want something delicious, ask your aunt!
"You little rascal, you're in such a hurry!" Xie He only has this one grandson, whom she adores. She patted his little bottom and scolded him with a smile, "You little devil, you know you get to eat meat if you follow your little aunt?"
Little Tiger grinned and nodded. Xie He, regardless of whether he understood or not, told him, "Auntie said that delicious food should be shared by everyone."
"So, we have to wait for Little Tiger's grandpa, eldest uncle, and youngest uncle to come back before we can eat."
Little Tiger nodded as if he understood, and without crying or making a fuss, he slid down from Xie He's arms to find his mother.
Having done everything he could, he saw Da Ya, Er Ya, and Wen Luozhi waving to the two sisters who were standing to the side.
Da Ya led the somewhat hesitant Er Ya to Wen Luozhi's side and asked, "Is there anything we can do for you, Auntie?"
Wen Luozhi pretended to think for a moment, then said to Daya, "My aunt recently learned a very pretty braiding technique, but she can't braid it herself."
"Would Da Ya and Er Ya be willing to let their little aunt practice?" She looked at the two sisters with a smile.
Daya naturally had nothing to say, and Erya squeezed the sesame candy in her hand and nodded as well.
Wen Luozhi smiled and led the two little girls to her room. She took out a flower rope she had bought in town from her sleeve; she had forgotten to take it out while packing.
"Hehe, I was so busy just now that I forgot to give them to you two," Wen Luozhi said with an embarrassed smile.
Da Ya's eyes lit up. She thought her aunt was just trying to coax her and that's why she hadn't taken it out. Turns out it really was something she bought for them.
"Here, this is yours, take it." She handed the hair tie to Daya, then gave the rest to Erya, saying, "This is Erya's."
"Thank you, Auntie!" Er Ya happily showed off to Da Ya, "Sister, my hair tie is so pretty!"
Da Ya smiled and nodded. Her aunt had good taste; hers was beautiful too.
After the two sisters finished admiring their hair ties, Wen Luozhi began to braid their hair.
Because of their dryness, it took her a long time to comb them properly, and she moved them very gently afterward, afraid of hurting them.
She braided a scorpion braid for Daya, and finally tied the end of the braid with two butterfly hair ties she had bought.
The two little braids hung down in front of her chest, and paired with two little butterflies, she looked cute and playful.
Er Ya styled her hair into a sweet double bun hairstyle, with the buns secured with silky hair ties, giving her a sweet look.
Wen Luozhi was very satisfied. Both sisters had beautiful features, but they were a bit thin and their complexions weren't great because they weren't getting enough nutrition, but they were still quite pretty.
Da Ya and Er Ya looked at each other for a long time, and then the two sisters suddenly ran outside.
Wen Luozhi looked completely bewildered. Could it be that the two sisters had different aesthetic standards and found the food ugly?
After leaving Wen Luozhi's room, Daya and Erya ran towards their room, shouting, "Mother! Mother! Come and see me and my sister!" Daya called out as she ran.
Li Chunxing, who was sewing shoe soles in her room, heard the noise and, thinking something had happened, quickly dropped her needlework and ran out.
"What's wrong! What happened to you two?" She ran out of the room and ran into the two sisters. She pulled them aside and asked them with concern.
"Mom, look at my and my sister's hair!" Er Ya pointed happily to her head, and Li Chunxing then noticed the two sisters' hair.
"You two..." Li Chunxing looked at the two little girls' pretty and novel hair and their beautiful hair ties with some confusion.
"Mom, my aunt braided my and my sister's hair, and she bought the hair ties today too," Daya said with a smile, her face beaming with undisguised joy.
Li Chunxing was a little surprised, but seeing the two sisters happy made her, as their mother, happy too.
Last night she was worried that her sister-in-law might sell her daughter. Today, she started to worry as soon as her eldest daughter went out, and she was relieved when they came back.
I never expected that even though she thought so much about her sister-in-law, her sister-in-law would still buy things for the child and send her back to her room to rest when she saw that she wasn't feeling well.
Li Chunxing lowered her head in shame, and Daya patted her face to comfort her, saying, "Mother, don't think too much about it. Aunt is doing well now! We just need to believe in her."
Li Chunxing looked up in surprise; she hadn't expected her youngest daughter to know so much.
She nodded, thinking that she should trust her sister-in-law just like the eldest daughter did.
The two little girls went to help in the kitchen again. Xie He glanced at their heads and couldn't help but praise them, "No one in Shanquan Village has granddaughters as well-behaved as my two."
Although she was a bit fierce at times, her two little girls ate whatever was offered to them, unlike other families where they couldn't even sit at the table.
"Your aunt is amazing! She has a good eye and is very skillful." After going around in circles, she praised Wen Luozhi again.
When it was almost time, Wen Luozhi came out of the room and went straight to the kitchen.
When Da Ya and Er Ya saw her, their eyes lit up, and their previous fear and restraint disappeared.
"Girl, these two girls both say you're amazing. They both love the hair you braid," Xie He said with a smile.
Wen Luozhi smiled with relief, as long as it wasn't because she thought her writing was ugly that she ran away!
Lifting the lid, the water level inside had shrunk considerably.
She poked at the pig offal with her chopsticks, and it was immediately pierced through. She took the basin, scooped out the offal, and then peeled a few boiled eggs and put them in.
The braised pig offal no longer smelled like pig manure; it only had a strong braised aroma. While it was still hot, Wenluozhi cut a small section into several small pieces and stuffed them into the mouths of the group.
Xie He squinted his eyes as soon as the pig offal entered his mouth.
Delicious! Absolutely delicious! She slowly chewed the small piece in her mouth, finding it increasingly fragrant with each chew.
If she hadn't seen it with her own eyes, she wouldn't have believed that the delicious-tasting thing in her mouth was pig offal.
Daya and Erya were also eating with great relish, and even Xiaohu was slowly grinding a piece of offal with his little hands.
Yang Guilan was initially reluctant, but seeing how much the others were enjoying their meal, she couldn't resist reaching out to grab the last piece of offal from the cutting board and stuffing it into her mouth.
She chewed a few times and her eyes widened in surprise. She never expected that the stinky pig offal she had washed, which even a dog wouldn't eat, could be made so delicious!
She swallowed it and reached for the food in the bowl, but Xie He smacked her hand with a chopstick, making her jump in pain.
"Didn't you say you weren't going to eat? Why are you reaching out your hand!" Xie He asked his second daughter-in-law loudly, hands on his hips.
Yang Guilan smiled awkwardly and said shamelessly, "If it were boiled in water like before, I definitely wouldn't eat it, Mom, but it smells so good."
"My little sister is so good at it! She's amazing!"
Xie He, hearing her praise Wen Luozhi, proudly raised her head and snorted coldly, "We'll eat when the boss and the others come back!"
"Don't be greedy! There's plenty for the family, but your little sister will have a very important use for the rest!"
Only after hearing her mother-in-law's words did Yang Guilan reluctantly remove her gaze from the basin of pig offal.
