Chapter 320: An unexpected surprise
Chapter 320: An unexpected surprise
Seeing Lex chasing after him, Dian immediately swam even faster.
But Lex was stronger, and it did not take long for him to catch up. He blocked Dian’s path and said in a low voice, "Dian, do not go. This is my own matter. What does it have to do with Nina? From beginning to end, she knew nothing about it."
"But you did all this because of Nina. Shouldn’t she know the truth?" Dian argued, clearly unwilling to agree. "Brother, if you tell her, maybe she will see you differently. Maybe you will finally have a chance."
Lex’s gaze dimmed. "Dian, if one day you became unbearably ugly, would you still stay by Nina’s side with that face?"
Nina’s mates were all exceptionally handsome. If he became hideous, how could he possibly have the courage to remain beside her?
"I..."
Dian fell silent. For a moment, he could not answer.
He cared deeply about his appearance too. Every time he went to see Nina, he carefully dressed himself up beforehand.
After hesitating for a while, he finally lowered his voice apologetically. "Brother... I’m sorry."
Then he slipped past Lex and continued swimming toward the shore.
Struggle flashed through Lex’s eyes. His fists tightened before he suddenly turned and swam after Dian again.
The moment Dian sensed his intention, he immediately tried to escape. Lex caught up once more, and the two males began fighting beneath the sea.
Dian’s strength was far inferior to Lex’s. Before long, he was defeated and restrained tightly with thick strands of seaweed.
Dian struggled fiercely. "Brother, let me go!"
Guilt filled Lex’s face. "Dian, just for these few days. Once these days are over, I will release you."
"But Nina will notice I’m missing sooner or later," Dian protested angrily. "You cannot hide this from her forever."
"Not so quickly," Lex replied quietly. "I will think of an excuse for you."
He brought Dian back to a secluded room deep within the underwater palace and locked him inside.
"Dian, stay here for now and focus on restoring your merman pearl. I am sorry."
After saying that, Lex turned and left the underwater palace.
Dian glared furiously at the seaweed binding his body and struggled with all his strength, but no matter what he did, he could not break free. In the end, he had no choice but to calm himself and begin absorbing energy to continue restoring his pearl.
Meanwhile, Lex returned to Nina’s palace and entered his own room.
Leaning silently against the headboard of his bed, he closed his eyes.
His heart was filled with turmoil.
The night passed quickly.
Early the next morning, Lex woke before dawn. At the exact time Nina usually woke up, he finished preparing breakfast and quietly waited outside her residence, hidden in an inconspicuous corner as he patiently watched for her to emerge.
He wanted to treasure every remaining second of these final days.
After waiting for some time, Nina finally woke.
Kith carried her toward the dining area for breakfast, and Lex immediately followed behind them.
The moment Nina sat at the table, Lex quickly brought over the dishes he had prepared himself. He stood nearby, watching her expectantly.
His cooking skills had improved tremendously lately. He no longer burned himself constantly while cooking either.
At the same time, unease lingered in his chest.
Nina already knew the truth about the merman pearl.
At first, he had wondered if he should simply stop appearing before her altogether. After all, he had deceived her.
But he could not bear to give up these final days.
He had spent the entire night thinking about it before finally deciding that no matter what happened, he wanted to seize every opportunity to stay by her side during the little time he had left. Even if she hit him or scolded him, he did not care.
Lex carefully studied Nina’s expression and relaxed slightly when he realized she did not seem angry.
Nina glanced at him, once again recalling the matter of the merman pearl.
She took a bite of the food he had prepared. "It’s delicious. Thank you."
The moment he heard her praise him, satisfaction instantly spread across Lex’s face.
A small burst of secret joy bloomed in his chest.
Nina had complimented him.
Maybe she truly was not angry with him after all.
He quickly waved his hand at her, signaling that it was nothing.
"Is your throat still not better?" Nina asked.
Lex lowered his lashes slightly and shook his head.
"Then when will it recover?" she continued.
Trying to communicate without being able to speak was clearly inconvenient.
Lex shook his head again.
"How about I take a look at it for you?" Nina offered gently.
She wanted to see exactly what was wrong with him and whether there was any way she could help treat it.
Lex hesitated for a moment before finally nodding. He was afraid that refusing would make Nina suspicious.
Nina quickly finished breakfast and used her ability to examine him.
Lex unconsciously held his breath, tension tightening his entire body.
A faint frown appeared between Nina’s brows.
Strange.
There was clearly nothing wrong with Lex’s throat, so why was he unable to speak?
She looked at him apologetically. "I’m sorry. I can’t find any problem."
Lex smiled gently and shook his head, signaling that it was fine.
Relief quietly loosened the tension in his chest.
Thankfully, Nina had not discovered the truth.
After thinking for a moment, Nina said, "Can we talk later? You do not need to speak. Just nod or shake your head."
Even if they could not communicate normally, she could still ask the questions herself.
A shadow flickered through Lex’s eyes, but he nodded quietly.
What was meant to come would come eventually.
After breakfast, Nina and Lex went to a shaded corner of the garden beneath the trees.
"Nina, the merman pearl inside my body belongs to you, doesn’t it?" Nina asked softly.
Lex nodded.
Nina sighed lightly. "Honestly, you all should not have lied to me."
Lex lowered his head slightly, guilt filling his eyes.
I’m sorry.
"Later, I’ll remove it and return it to you," Nina said.
She felt that the relationship between them was still unclear. It was not right for her to keep something so important that belonged to someone else.
The color instantly drained from Lex’s face. Pain and sorrow surged through his eyes as he shook his head firmly.
He did not want her to return it.
If he could not stay by her side himself, then at least he wanted his merman pearl to remain with her in his place.
"You don’t want it back?" Nina’s expression grew complicated. "But it belongs to you."
Lex shook his head again.
Now it belongs to you.
Nina bit her lip softly before finally asking, "Lex... you like me, don’t you?"
Lex froze.
His fingers instinctively tightened around the hem of his clothes.
He had never expected Nina to ask something so directly.
For a moment, he was completely at a loss.
In his current state, he did not know whether he should confess his feelings to her or not.
When Nina saw that he remained silent for so long, confusion appeared in her eyes.
Had she misunderstood everything?
She looked at him again. "You don’t like me?"
The moment he heard that, Lex hurriedly shook his head.
How could he not?
He liked her so much it hurt.
"How much do you like me?" Nina asked softly.
Lex’s cheeks gradually warmed. After a long hesitation, he nodded faintly.
He could not force himself to deny it.
Nina fell silent for a moment before speaking seriously.
"Lex... would you like to try being with me? Right now, I don’t have those kinds of feelings for you yet, but I think we can try getting to know each other properly. We can give each other a chance."
She was not made of stone.
She could not completely ignore everything Lex felt for her.
Although what she felt for him now was only a budding affection, she was willing to try.
After all, the bond between them had already become so deep. Even if things did not work out in the end, at least neither of them would be left with regrets.
Lex’s eyes widened in shock.
For a moment, he genuinely thought he had heard wrong.
What had Nina just said?
She wanted to try with him?
Was she willing to give him a chance?
The overwhelming happiness struck him so suddenly that his mind nearly went blank.
His gaze trembled as he looked at her desperately, almost unable to believe it.
...Was she serious?
At that moment, more than anything else, he wanted to speak.
But he could not.
Nina nodded gently. "I mean it."
The moment he received her answer, countless emotions crashed violently through Lex’s heart.
Joy. Excitement. Disbelief. And beneath it all, an unbearable ache.
He was happy because Nina had finally agreed to give him a chance.
Excited because after waiting for so long, he had finally received the answer he dreamed of.
But at the same time, sorrow quietly spread through him, because he already knew he could no longer truly stay by her side.
His fingers tightened around his clothes as turmoil consumed him completely.
For the first time in his life, he did not know what choice he should make.
