Chapter 1218 - 1207: Not Living a Repressed Life
Chapter 1218 - 1207: Not Living a Repressed Life
Ye Cheng reminisced about the past, as if it were all still right before his eyes. "I never imagined I would see this day. It’s my big brother who gave me everything I have now. After Li Xian became the Crown Prince, the ministers attacked me countless times, and it was always my big brother who defended me and believed in me. How could he just be gone like this?"
In just a few short days of keeping vigil, Ye Cheng had already lost a lot of weight. After that, he no longer had the heart to stay in the capital and instead returned to Jing’an City.
Before leaving he went to see Ye Lu. Ye Lu was no longer the high-spirited, arrogant concubine of Prince Linsan she used to be. She had grown old, become an utterly ordinary Old Lady. Ever since Chen Gaoxuan died, with no one left to quarrel with her, she had become even more withdrawn.
"I heard the Zhong Sheng and the crying outside. He’s dead." Ye Lu let out a mocking laugh. "So what if he got the throne in the end? No heir, not exactly long-lived, and he hardly enjoyed his life at all. Tell me, what was it he was chasing?"
Ye Cheng looked at her coldly. "Do you think everyone is as selfish as you?"
"What do you know? I’m from the future. Where I come from, the vast majority of people are selfish. If a man is not for himself, heaven and earth will destroy him. I’m not wrong. I just chose the wrong path and wasn’t as skilled as others, that’s all. But him—he was so noble it made me doubt whether he and I were even from the same place."
"My big brother is not someone you can compare yourself to." Ye Cheng said angrily.
"Your big brother? You don’t know, do you? Your big brother died a long time ago. After that, his body was taken over by another soul. Otherwise, where would all that advanced knowledge have come from? How else do you think you lot conquered this country?" Ye Lu said carelessly. "It’s a pity, really. He’s dead, and you don’t even have the chance to take revenge."
"You understand nothing." Ye Cheng looked at her with sarcasm. "Blood ties aren’t the Wei Yi, Emotion is built through time spent together. I’d long sensed something different about my big brother, but so what? He treated me as his younger brother, so he will always be my big brother."
"You useless coward, you can even let your own big brother’s murder go for the sake of power." Ye Lu laughed mockingly. "But of course, the throne has been handed to your son, after all."
Ye Cheng looked at her in disappointment. "So now this is all you have left to keep yourself mentally balanced. No matter what you say, I have my own measure in my heart. You can’t sway me. I had originally planned to tell you about your son Chen Min before I left, but now it seems I won’t bother."
"My son?" Ye Lu whipped around. "How is he now? Where is he?"
Ye Cheng gave a malicious grin. "I told you, I don’t feel like talking about it now."
Watching his back as he walked away, Ye Lu shouted, "Tell me, how is my Minmin doing now? Is he well?"
"What did you do to her?" Bai Xianyi asked her husband curiously.
"Nothing. She’s just a madwoman now, spouting nonsense. Let’s go." Ye Cheng looked at the Imperial City and finally sighed with sorrow. He thought, if not for his big brother’s arrival, the Ye Family might have ceased to exist long ago. How would there be today’s glory?

"Task completed. Enter the next world?"
"Yes."
When Ye Qiu woke up her head felt like it was splitting open, all the signs of a hangover. She forced her eyes open and took in her surroundings.
The place she lived in could only be described as bare bones. A simple wooden bed, a suitcase leaning against the wall, and not far away a makeshift table with an induction cooker on it, plus a few plates and bowls and things like soy sauce and salt.
The walls were all grimy black, probably the marks left by years of use, but the floor was very clean. Outside was a small balcony; the bathroom was on one side of it, and on the other side two simple pieces of clothing were hanging out to dry.
Ye Qiu couldn’t find any hot water, so she washed her face with cold water and then began to recall the memories left behind by the original.
As always, her name was still Ye Qiu.
The original really had drunk last night. She had just started working and was forced by her boss to go out and drink with clients, which led to her waking up with this splitting headache today.
After going through it all, Ye Qiu curled her lip. Setting everything else aside, the original was honestly a stifled little pitiful thing.
As a child, she had been abandoned at the door of an orphanage, then adopted by her foster parents. At first the three of them got along quite well, until the foster mother who’d been diagnosed as infertile was suddenly found to be pregnant.
After that, Ye Qiu became the extra one. Not wanting to be accused of freeloading, she would help her foster parents with housework after school and also look after her younger sister.
But no matter how well she did the chores, the foster mother who couldn’t stand the sight of her would still pick faults. As for the younger sister, no matter why she cried, it was always Ye Qiu who got beaten and scolded.
When she grew up, the little sister she had practically raised with her own hands not only didn’t feel grateful or close to her, but treated her like a servant just like the foster mother did, ordering her around for everything.
She knew she shared no blood with anyone in this family, and she was grateful that her foster parents gave her a place to live and food to eat, so no matter how unfairly she was treated, she endured it.
Growing up timid and submissive at home, Ye Qiu was also a soft dough ball at school, letting others knead her however they liked because she had no confidence to resist.
She had thought that once she got into university, left that home, and started working, things would be different. But with her personality already formed, she still ended up being pushed around.
Her scholarship at school was snatched away and she didn’t dare say a word. At work, she was loaded with extra tasks, even her off-hours got taken up, and she still didn’t dare protest. On top of that, as a fresh graduate just starting her job, she had to face the exploitation of her foster parents, who made her hand over all her wages. If she refused, they would go to her school or workplace and make a scene, calling her an ungrateful wretch who didn’t know how to be thankful.
The original had thought about fighting back, but she had neither the ability nor the courage, and she had long grown used to swallowing her anger. Most importantly, the big scene her foster parents caused back in high school had left her with a psychological shadow.
This time, she actually could have refused the work drinking session, but her boss threatened her, saying if she didn’t go, she wouldn’t pass her probation and he wouldn’t sign off on her internship certificate.
She was just one step away from getting her diploma; the timid, weak original had no courage to refuse.
But she’d never drunk before, and downing so much at once naturally wrecked her body. Feeling her life was unbearably stifling, she lost the will to go on living—so she became the Ye Qiu of now.
The original’s only wish was to live for herself and not keep on living so suffocated.
After reading through this short life, Ye Qiu let out a long sigh. It wasn’t that the Task was hard to complete; it was just that the original really made one sigh with regret. Honestly, what would have been so terrible about just snapping back at people directly? But the environment she grew up in never allowed her that courage. You could also say she was too kind, and didn’t want to be someone who forgot恩 and义, who turned her back on those who had raised her.
