Chapter 373 I only know that I have to go on

Chapter 373 I only know that I have to go on

"There's nothing between us." Su Ming's voice was a little deeper than before, but he wasn't sure he believed it. Every contact with her was like a test of his inner self, making it impossible for him to maintain that clear boundary. He knew that he was slowly being drawn into an invisible vortex, and at the center of this vortex was her.

She said nothing more, but turned and walked to the window, standing there, gazing out into the distance. Her back was solitary and lonely, like a solitary soul wandering the wilderness. Su Ming looked at her, his complex emotions surging once more. He had once lived an ordinary life of his own. Back then, he had been like any other person, strolling in the sunshine, occasionally stopping to exchange a few brief greetings with passersby. But now, all of this had become a distant memory, replaced by an inescapable fate and a choice that could never be shaken off.

"Will you always be like this?" he asked suddenly, his voice low but filled with a kind of imperceptible tension.

She didn't answer immediately, but sighed softly. "I don't know." Her tone remained calm, but it carried a deep sense of helplessness. That helplessness, like a deep shackle, firmly bound her heart.

Su Ming watched her back, his inner anxiety growing stronger. Every conversation with her would plunge him into an inextricable vortex of emotions, a vortex that constantly devoured his once clear thinking. He had once believed himself to be a simple executor, an unknown spy, unconcerned with other emotions and ties. But now, he began to doubt whether he could ever return to that state of being unmoved by any emotion.

"If one day, you let me choose... what would you like me to do?" he suddenly asked. The words came out almost without a word, like an outburst of some deep-seated impulse. He could no longer control his inner turmoil. The once calm, rational self seemed to have vanished without a trace.

She didn't turn around, but stood there quietly, as if she had heard some distant voice. After a long moment, she slowly spoke, "You won't make a choice." Her voice was still cold, but it carried a heavy meaning. "You no longer have a choice."

These words were like a hammer, hammering down on Su Ming's heart. He felt a sharp pain, as if something had struck him hard in the chest. He knew she was right. His fate had already been determined; he had no real choice. And she, perhaps, had already seen through all his powerlessness and struggles.

He stood there silently, watching her back quietly, his emotions churning violently. Every contact, every conversation, plunged him into deep confusion, from which he himself seemed unable to escape forever.

That day, Su Ming said nothing more. He turned and walked away, into the night outside the window. The street lights were dim and lonely, and the air was filled with a damp smell. Everything in the city seemed to whisper silently, telling unspeakable secrets. With each step he took, he felt heavier, as if he was burdened with endless responsibilities and inescapable constraints.

He wondered if he could hold on any longer. Every mission, every emotional entanglement, dragged him towards an unpredictable future. In that future, could he find his true self? Could he escape the whirlpool of fate?

These questions seemed to have no answers, and Su Ming could no longer stop.

Su Ming's steps were heavy and slow. The night wind blew through the streets, bringing waves of chill. Although the late summer temperature had not yet completely subsided, he felt a chill deep in his bones. It was a chill that came from the depths of his heart. It was not the temperature outside, but an emotional emptiness, a loss after being suppressed for a long time.

He once thought himself to be iron-clad and resolute, believing he could mask all emotional fluctuations with reason and responsibility. However, all of this was shattered one by one with each encounter with her. He began to feel that he was no longer the ghost who could move alone in the darkness, but was pulled by her presence, wandering between hesitation and anxiety.

"Will you always be like this?" Those words echoed in Su Ming's mind, like a knot difficult to untie. Every time he recalled them, a heavy pain welled up in his heart. He didn't stop walking, still moving forward, but with every step, he was dragged by the fluctuations of memories and emotions.

Tonight, he still had to complete his mission. He was a spy for the Military Intelligence Bureau, and every action involved a part of his inner self. He had habitually obeyed these orders, seeing them as the sole meaning of his existence. Yet, every time a mission was over, he felt a deep sense of emptiness—as if he was playing a role, unable to return to his true self.

He walked into a dim alley. Under the dim light, the street was nearly deserted. Only the occasional car passed by in the distance, its wheels clattering against the ground. The damp air made him frown unconsciously, but even more unsettling was his own mood, that inexplicable wave of emotion. He knew that every step closer would make it harder to withdraw.

"What are you waiting for?" a voice called from the darkness. It was low and testing, like some indescribable power emanating from the underground, deep and urgent. Su Ming subconsciously turned around and saw a tall figure standing in the shadows, his eyes flickering faintly.

"I'm waiting for you," Su Ming said calmly, his voice calm, but his heart was already churning with emotions. He recognized this man; they had met months earlier. This man was his collaborator on this mission, a spy who also lurked in the shadows. The purpose of the mission was still unclear, but there was only one clear goal: to obtain intelligence, no matter the cost.

"You're not in a good mood today." The man seemed to see through Su Ming's mood swings and stared at him silently. "Did you run into her again?"

Su Ming didn't answer, but only smiled reluctantly, but the smile was a little stiff. "Nothing, the mission must continue."

The woman looked at him, her eyes narrowed slightly, clearly disbelieving him, but she didn't ask any further questions. She turned and led Su Ming into an abandoned warehouse deep in the alley. Su Ming followed her into the dimly lit space. Aside from a few old pieces of equipment and piled-up shipping boxes, the warehouse was nearly empty. Only a single, dim lightbulb hung in the air, emitting a faint glow.

"You should let go of those irrelevant emotions." The man suddenly spoke, his tone as calm as ever, with an irrefutable firmness. "We cannot allow any interference in what we are doing."

"I know," Su Ming whispered, but there was no trace of confidence in his voice. He didn't know if he could truly let go of those feelings. Perhaps, at this moment, he was more uncertain than ever whether he could continue on this path.

The woman walked to the table, picked up a document, and handed it to Su Ming. "This is your objective tonight." Her tone remained calm, but the sharpness in her eyes was hard to ignore. "Once you complete your mission, leave here as soon as possible and do what you need to do. Don't waste any more time."

Su Ming took the document and opened it. It contained only some simple text and a few photos. The photos showed a middle-aged man with a stern expression and penetrating eyes, unlike an ordinary businessman. The document contained only vague information about the man's background and activities. His identity remained unclear, but intelligence suggested he was likely a key figure in the enemy's forces.

"Is this tonight's mission?" Su Ming asked quietly, his heart remaining calm. He had completed this simple mission countless times, and it was no longer new to him.

"Yes, contact us immediately after completing the mission," the person said. Her tone remained calm, but Su Ming could see a subtle hint of nervousness in her eyes. "Remember, don't let anyone know you're here to carry out a mission."

Su Ming nodded, placed the documents in his arms, and took a deep breath, trying to temporarily suppress the chaotic emotions in his heart. He knew that the mission required him to devote himself completely, without any worries or emotions.

However, just as he turned around to leave, the voice sounded again behind him: "Why on earth have you come to this point?" The man's words suddenly became heavy, as if weighing on his heart.

Su Ming paused, his heart empty. He didn't want to answer, and he didn't want to. Every time he tried to return to his original self, every time he tried to put those tangled emotions behind him, he encountered invisible obstacles. And she, that woman, had long become an inescapable demon in his heart. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, she had taken root in his heart, a part of him that he couldn't let go.

"I just know I have to keep going," he whispered, a tired determination in his voice. "I have to keep going."

The woman didn't say anything else, but nodded silently, as if she had heard all his thoughts. Her eyes were deep, but without any more emotional fluctuations, as if everything had been smoothed out by time.

Su Ming didn't stop. He turned and left, his steps still heavy, his heart growing restless. He knew he could no longer turn back, could not stop, could not harbor excessive affection for anyone or anything. He would not allow himself to be weak again, nor would he allow himself to lose himself again.

Each mission is like the straw that breaks the camel's back, gradually forcing him towards an irreversible future. And will that woman, the one who has always tugged at his heartstrings, remain in his life forever and become his inescapable nightmare?
