Chapter 426 The Truth Comes Out
There were still quite a few flaws in Batman's memory erasure process.
This is almost inevitable. Memory is merely a carrier of objective events; erasing a memory does not mean that the event never happened.
Moreover, Batman still doesn't fully understand Dr. Banner's situation and has misjudged the relationship between Hulk and Dr. Banner.
This led to a significant consequence: Dr. Banner forgot what happened, but not completely.
Memories from Hulk form are being transmitted from Hulk's mind on the other side of his consciousness.
The memory of Hulk not being able to read and then going to the amusement park was becoming increasingly familiar to Dr. Banner: "Does anyone know what I was doing before?"
Dr. Banner scribbled down a few chemical formulas in his paper notebook. These were notes he jotted down while trying to figure out a solution; they might not be useful, but they effectively evoked his memory: "I felt like I was sitting by Superman's hospital bed? At least Tony, Batman, and Mr. Fantastic were around too!"
Batman knew things might be exposed, but he didn't expect it to happen so quickly. Now, it was impossible to keep it a secret any longer.
"During the time between the appearance and defeat of the zombie Sentinels and Superman waking up from his coma, we did do more than just this one thing, and there was more than one thing we needed to be concerned about."
Batman slowly recounted the events: "Superman got infected, and we worked together to try and solve the problem. Then, something happened—"
"This isn't just some things!"
Upon hearing this, Joey felt his head buzzing—he had thought that old Thomas's Batman was already the most annoying Batman, but he had forgotten the saying that like father, like son.
Looking back now, I realize that at least half of the most difficult hurdles in my life were caused by the Batman family!
When a proper Batman gets into trouble, his destructive power is no less than that of a psychopath like the old Batman.
This is already a critical time, and for Batman to do something like this, and then have it exposed, is really detrimental to unity.
Joey is now even angrier than when he first found out that Batman had kept the news of Starfire's capture a secret from him.
Honestly, if it weren't for the inappropriate situation, he would have liked to punch him right now.
With his hands on his waist and his back to everyone, Joey was trembling with anger. He desperately needed a deep breath to calm himself down.
Theoretically, Kryptonian acceleration of thought could allow Joey to think faster than any supercomputer in the world, thus extending his chaotic thoughts to an extraordinary level.
However, if a Kryptonian really wants to act impulsively, they generally won't care about so many other things.
-
Sigh... Fine, I can't take it anymore!
The next second, Joey swung his right hand from his waist back and lunged forward, punching Batman in the left cheek.
Joey thought that perhaps the Superman Clark Kent in his memory once said something like, "I want to twist Batman's head off almost every day!"
So punching Batman himself isn't a big deal, is it?
Batman instinctively reached out to block, but was sent flying far away by the powerful punch and embedded in the wall.
If it weren't for the green light protection, that blow would have been half his life.
"Calm down, calm down, calm down!"
Seeing Superman directly attacking Batman and even preparing to give chase, Dr. Banner, who rushed to break up the fight, was almost scared out of his wits: "Wait a minute, Superman, think about it! Batman is still helping us maintain the Green Light barrier! If you kill him, we'll all be exposed to the virus!"
Reed transformed into a rubber band to tightly bind Superman, while the Thing used its massive body to block the two of them.
"Get out of my way, all of you!"
忍无可忍的乔伊只是兀自向前,里德的橡胶身体限制不了他半分,他随手一拨,就跟掀开一大块海绵一样将石头人划拉到了一旁,抬手就準备接着揍蝙蝠侠两拳出气。
"This is not the time!" Iron Man's fist timely grasped Joey's iron fist that was about to swing again, and Tony also joined the fight-breaking team: "What's done is done, so there's no need to dwell on it anymore. The most important thing now is for us to use every bit of our strength and work together."
"But," Tony changed the subject, "once we get through this crisis, we'll have to keep Batman under control."
"I agree with Iron Man's opinion." "Agreed."
Both Dr. Banner and Reed chose to calm things down; the zombie virus was spreading, and they couldn't afford to waste time.
But even so, the atmosphere between Batman and everyone else has clearly changed.
If before it was merely the gaze directed at a mysterious master, now it's the gaze directed at a mysterious enemy.
Memory is something that is extremely important to everyone. How can it be easily erased or altered by others?
Based on this alone, the relationship between the group can never be the same as before.
This made Joey, who was caught between Batman and the others, feel even more uncomfortable.
Everyone is feeling terrible, so who is feeling better?
The answer, of course, is Doctor Doom, hidden beneath Tony's body.
This is why Tony had been subtly trying to steer the conversation toward Batman's secrets.
He originally intended to give Reed a heads-up so that Reed could see through the fog, but he never expected that Reed would not think in that direction at all, and instead was single-mindedly focused on finding a cure for the infection.
Fortunately, the special connection between Dr. Banner and Hulk came into play, and Batman was ultimately not allowed to escape.
This level of achievement is already sufficient.
In a game of Werewolf, the words of the guy marked as "bad guy" naturally become unreliable, and thus one becomes temporarily safe again.
This "security" may not last long, but from a long-term perspective, the later Tony Stark is revealed to be Doctor Doom, the better.
"There needs to be a reason to erase our memories, right?"
As victims, it's impossible not to feel angry, no matter how much unity is expected. However, Dr. Banner is best at controlling his emotions, and even when questioning the perpetrator, Batman's tone remained polite: "Batman, would you mind explaining your motive?"
Even so, at this point, Batman still refused to reveal the whole story: "—I did it."
Everyone only knew that the other party had erased a part of their memory, but they didn't know why Batman suddenly and recklessly erased everyone's memories.
However, this does not stump these people. As mentioned before, memories can be deleted, but what has happened cannot be erased.
Everything in the world has a cause, a process, and a result.
"To be honest, it's not hard to guess what happened."
Reed also added what he thought was the information, clarifying the situation for himself and the others from the known cause and effect: "According to Batman, Superman was injured first, but now he is unharmed, which means that we at least made efforts in this regard before."
Mr. Fantastic knew that Superman was not unscathed after solving the problem of the zombie Sentinels; he too was infected with the zombie virus.
It is also known that Superman is now conscious and behaving normally, and has not tried to chew himself up like a piece of chewing gum.
The cause and the result are both known, but the process is missing. This can only mean one thing: "Did we examine or even operate on Superman because of the zombie virus? Did we learn some secrets we shouldn't have known during Superman's treatment?"
Reed may be slow to grasp social dynamics, but he is extremely perceptive when it comes to technology. From the moment he first saw Superman, he was curious about why the other was so powerful.
This curiosity persisted even after he encountered an entire population of Kryptonians, and in his view, it might truly be considered an extremely valuable secret.
If one's memory were erased because of knowing about such things, then it wouldn't be entirely unreasonable.
Putting himself in Mr. Fantastic's shoes, he had to admit that he would even be willing to take the risk for such a secret.
"We have done some things, but we haven't developed any antidote, or even started thinking about it."
Batman kept his mouth shut, only providing the corresponding information when the other party guessed what it was: "Superman was infected with the zombie virus, but our efforts had little effect; he almost healed himself."
"Anyway, Superman did defeat the virus."
In this high-pressure conversation, only one sentence was truly reassuring, and Reed had another good idea: "So, besides the Patient Zero that Iron Man mentioned earlier, who was infected with the zombie virus and then recovered, we actually have Superman as a ready-made Patient One?"
Does that mean that Superman might have antibodies in his body that are effective against the zombie virus?
Even if he is a Kryptonian, at least this is still of some reference value to individual humans.
Unlike Batman, Joey wasn't too bothered by this kind of thing, especially when his blood sample might be related to the life and death of millions of people in New York: "Do you need to have your blood drawn? If so—" Joey stretched out his arm without hesitation: "You'd better find some powerful, high-quality, and professionally suitable equipment."
The group, who had not yet fully learned the full picture of their lost memories, were completely unaware that they were already "repeating the same task over and over again."
Batman remained silent, watching as they tackled yet another problem they had pondered before—how to break through Superman's skin?
My skin — %$
Batman listened as Superman revealed the Doomsday's characteristics without reservation, and suddenly felt that all his previous hard work had been in vain.
However, it wasn't entirely useless. While everyone's attention was focused on Superman, Batman, out of sight, tucked a gold card, about the size of a playing card and reflecting a metallic sheen, into his waistband.
A magic tarot card covered in gold metal—he had just taken a solid punch, and this tool, made of N metal, had only just been transferred from Superman's hands to his own.
Powerful, high-quality, and professionally suitable tools.
