Chapter 68 The Fearful Killer
Chapter 68 The Fearful Killer
There's only one last damned person left.
Once Claude is killed, Aure's revenge can be put to an end.
However, she had been stuck in the palace for almost half a year, but still couldn't find an opportunity to take action.
In fact, she has no chance to see Claude at all.
Claude had long since abandoned politics and spent his days locked in his palace.
It's easy to imagine how devastating the series of misfortunes that happened around him were for him.
However, Aure would never feel the slightest pity, much less guilt.
Waiting idly wasn't a solution, so Auré would occasionally go to the Heraldry and chat with Jonas, hoping to hear some useful information.
"The kingdom hasn't seen such unity between its people for many years. Perhaps we should thank those pirates for bringing the royal family and the various noble families closer together."
As Jonas spoke, he began to cut a thick slice of pie.
The pie was made of lamb, very chewy, probably from goat, and had been roasted beforehand, with some signs of smokiness, but it had a unique flavor.
The beverage is honey milk, which perfectly neutralizes the goat's gamey smell.
Aure took a bite, and the juices burst in her mouth. She shook her head and chewed slowly.
Take another sip of sweet, rich milk...
hmm~
Satisfaction comes from within.
"Is it good?" Jonas asked.
Aurelia then remembered the person beside her, nodded, and said:
"But I heard those pirates are very powerful."
"Yes, Joachim was a legendary pirate, and the culprit behind this was his son. This man inherited Joachim's courage but was far more cunning than his father. He actually led his fleet to escape from the encirclement of loyal dogs."
Putting everything else aside, Aurelia has personally witnessed the talent of a loyal dog.
The fact that the pirate could fight a loyal dog was enough to show that he was no ordinary person.
Aurelia remembered that the loyal dog had said he had suffered a loss at the hands of a pirate—but that statement sounded more like the loyal dog had driven the other party to a dead end. Could it be the same person?
"But in the past few months, many lords have arrived late, leading ships or sending vessels to join the alliance. The strength of the allied forces is still growing, and those pirates will definitely not be able to withstand them."
As she spoke, Aure picked out another pie from the center and enjoyed it with her drink.
"That's beyond doubt."
Jonas pinched the handle of the glass and lifted it up.
"The pirates are blockaded at sea. Once they discover any trace of the enemy, the loyal dog and the Minister of the Navy will surely be able to lead a huge army to wipe them out. Moreover, the Royal Ministry of Magic, the Alchemy Group, and the Wizarding Corps will also cooperate from the side."
The moment a woman swallows her food, she forgets all about her "out-of-shape" figure.
Aurelia did the same; she picked up a handkerchief, wiped her mouth, and said:
"Hopefully, the victory brought by the allied forces will encourage His Majesty."
"Oh, that's probably difficult," Jonas said with a regretful expression. "His Majesty's concern lies elsewhere."
"Yes, the pain of losing a child is unforgettable," Aurelia said, deeply understanding the situation.
"That's only natural, but His Majesty is the ruler of a country, and what he's worried about is probably the issue of succession."
At this point, Jonas let out a deep sigh.
"The only time His Majesty went out in the past few months was on the day the Queen gave birth. I accompanied him and waited outside the Crown Prince's palace. I saw His Majesty pacing back and forth in the corridor outside the door with unease."
That was indeed an opportunity, but given Bob Capello's status, Aurelia was simply not qualified to get close to that place, thus missing a golden chance.
"It's a pity it's a girl," Aurelia said.
“Who can argue with that? If it were a boy, it would bring His Majesty even more comfort,” Jonas shook his head. “However, no one can deny that the princess is indeed a good medicine, and right now she has become His Majesty’s darling.”
How do you know?
"On the day of the birth, a maid accidentally burned the princess's back, leaving a flame-shaped scar. His Majesty was furious and ordered the maid to be executed. Her body was hung in front of the main gate of Platinum Castle for seven days. When it was taken down, it was covered with maggots."
Aurée disagreed: "No elder can tolerate their junior being harmed."
"Perhaps, but His Majesty has kept the princess by his side ever since she was born, which shows His Majesty's favoritism towards her."
Upon hearing this, Auleta shuddered and stopped her hand from taking another piece of pie:
"You mean, the princess is now residing in the king's palace?"
"Hmm..." Jonas nodded.
"But the princess is only a one-month-old baby now. Is His Majesty truly capable of caring for her on his own?"
"The princess is cared for by a senior wet nurse."
"Is she allowed in and out of the king's bedchamber?"
"That's right. Even the Queen can't see her daughter now. Only the wet nurse and the maid who serves His Majesty his meals are allowed to pass through the palace gates..."
Aure left the Herald Academy; by this time, she had gathered enough intelligence.
In the following days, Aurée continued to formulate and prepare for the final assassination plan.
She discovered that there were three wet nurses responsible for taking care of the princess.
To ensure the quality of their breast milk, wet nurses would receive dedicated care throughout the day whenever they left the palace.
It would be quite difficult for Aure to portray their identities.
However, the maid who delivered the meals was not specifically assigned, which made Aurée feel that she had an opportunity to take advantage of the situation.
Later, Aure discovered that Claude's dinner time coincided with the time when the nannies changed shifts.
There is no better time than this if one is to impersonate a maid to carry out an assassination plan.
Feeling that everything was ready, Aure decided to carry out this final revenge.
She ambushed the maid on her usual route and used a handkerchief soaked in a sleeping drug to knock her unconscious.
The maid wouldn't wake up within half a day, so Aurelia didn't kill her.
Half a day later, at least one of Aurelia and Claude will die; there's no need to kill another innocent person.
She then changed into the other man's clothes, removed her disguise, and pushed the cart to the king's bedroom.
Two guard knights stood watch outside the palace gates.
"Stop," they said.
Aure held onto the handle of the toy car and stood still, waiting for their instructions.
After conducting a thorough search of Aulet, they said:
"Try it."
Upon hearing this, Aure immediately tasted all the food and drinks on the cart.
After waiting for five minutes and confirming that Aure was still unharmed, they allowed her to enter.
Aurée pushed the cart and stood inside the palace, while the Guardian Knight closed the door behind her.
The palace was resplendent with gold and jade.
The burning fireplace made the room exceptionally warm. Above the fireplace hung a huge platinum emblem, and on the left and right sides of the emblem were a set of platinum armor and a pair of swords and shields.
A huge, exquisite carpet in gold and silver was laid on the floor, and the walls were covered with large oil paintings.
The walls were filled with beautifully shaped sculptures and porcelain with soft lines, as well as many precious objects that even Aure had never seen before.
A luxurious king-size bed draped with sheer curtains sits deep within the room.
Claude was leaning against the bed, gazing intently at the sleeping baby.
Aulet suddenly realized that even the most despicable and vile people have a kind side.
But Claude's sins are unforgivable, and Aurelia still wants to kill him!
"Your Majesty," said Aurelia. "It is time for your meal."
As she spoke, Aure began setting out today's dinner on the table.
There were eight dishes and three drinks in total, with steamed sweet potatoes and steamed peas as the main course.
The peas are small and not an agricultural product of the Lines Plateau.
If so, Aure would definitely throw them away.
Hmph! Those who break their oaths do not deserve to enjoy the crops of the highlands.
After the food was arranged, Claude remained lying by the bedside, and Aure spoke again:
"His Majesty?"
Claude then reacted slightly, exchanging a dazed glance with Aurelia.
Compared to their last meeting, Aurelia felt that Claude had aged at least ten years.
Claude stood up hunched over and staggered toward the dining table.
Then, without a word, he poured himself a large glass of sparkling wine—which he could have simply ordered, as that was the maid's job—and gulped it down. After that, he grabbed a handful of peas and stuffed them into his mouth.
He seemed to have no appetite and showed little interest in the dishes in front of him.
Besides Aurelia and Claude, there was only a baby who couldn't speak in the palace. The wet nurse was not present at the moment.
At this moment, Claude's consciousness was wavering, and there was no better time to make a move.
Aurelia knew that the Guardian Knights would search her, so she did not carry a weapon.
She had to find someone in the room on short notice.
Soon, Aure's gaze fell on the sword beside the fireplace.
Aure quietly backed away until she reached the wall, then turned around and reached out to draw the sword from above her head.
She drew her sword, then turned around, but...
Just then, the light in front of her was almost completely blocked by a shadow.
Then, she felt a powerful force.
Claude pinned Aure's clenched hand against the wall with one hand, while his other hand gripped her neck.
She has been discovered.
"You tried to assassinate me!" Claude glared angrily. "I'm certainly not in good shape right now, but as a monarch, if I didn't always be vigilant, I would have been killed hundreds of times over. And you actually tried to assassinate me using such a clumsy method!"
Aurelia struggled to breathe, opened her jaw, and let out a painful groan.
She tried to break free, but the difference in strength between them was too great.
"The Sinclair family isn't known for its violence, but they're certainly not weak either," Claude said. "Tell me honestly, who are you, and who gave you permission to do this!"
Then Claude released his grip, pushed Aure to the ground, and pressed the tip of his sword against Aure's neck.
Due to lack of oxygen, Aure exhaled sharply, but choked on her saliva and began to cough repeatedly.
She said nothing, her face showing no fear, but stared intently at Claude with her hateful eyes.
It was Claude who recognized Aure first; indeed, Aure had already dropped her disguise.
"I've seen you... You really aren't dead... You're Jasper Lines' widow, you're Robin Capello's daughter!"
Aure couldn't help but sneer. She hadn't expected that this oathbreaker would actually remember his crimes!
"I see," Claude concluded to himself, "You've come to seek revenge on me!"
Aurée roared, "You are not worthy to call his name! You betrayed my husband and killed my two sons. I must kill you to let their souls rest in peace."
"Betrayal?" Claude asked in a questioning tone.
He's going to try and make excuses!
Aurée was furious. She raised her head, completely ignoring the fact that her throat was being slashed by the blade:
"You two were once brothers, and my husband quelled the monster rebellion for you. All he asked for was a piece of wasteland, yet you ordered your troops to be assembled and attacked the Lyons Plateau. Isn't that betrayal?!"
Upon hearing this, Claude chuckled softly:
"Madam, I think you have misunderstood me. To this day, I still regard Jasper as a brother. He is an outstanding man and can be considered a model for all nobles."
"But you..."
"...I was just about to explain, Mrs. Auré,"
Claude interrupted Aurelia and continued,
"I am very grateful for Jasper's help to me. I am willing to give him honor, titles, and gold. I am even willing to marry into the Lanes family. But he asked me for land, which I absolutely cannot agree to."
"Why? It's just a barren wasteland that nobody wants!"
"The problem isn't whether it's rich or poor. The Rhine Plateau is in the center of the kingdom, while the land Jasper is demanding is northeast of the royal city. Once Jasper has two non-adjacent territories, he can attack the royal family from two directions, and then Platinum Castle will be exposed to danger."
Aurelia was so angry that her nose flared up, and she almost ground her teeth to powder.
"You know my husband would never betray you!"
"He might not," Claude shrugged, "but who can guarantee his sons and grandsons won't?"
Aurée couldn't say for sure, but could only say:
"Even so, you could simply refuse him; why attack the Lines Plateau!"
Claude curled his lip and said:
"When I heard reports of his effortless quelling of the monster rebellion, I immediately saw him as a threat. The Lynes family had actually thrived in that desolate, oxygen-deprived land! And when he demanded land, I sensed his ambition. This is dangerous; I must nip it in the bud!"
"Just because of your suspicions and worries, is it necessary to start a war and destroy the entire Lines family?!"
Aurelia howled like a gray wolf, her face contorted with bulging veins.
Klaus said in a flat, cold tone:
"The Sinclair family does not have great power. Eugene has made all the families bow down with just a book and a tongue. Therefore, for thousands of years, the Sinclair family has been living in constant fear that someone will dethrone us from the throne."
"Therefore, our family has adopted a survival strategy that is completely different from other families. The powerful may suppress all rebellions, so they crave peace, but the Sinclair family cannot do that."
"Our only pursuit is...chaos! As long as there is chaos, as long as there is constant fighting, as long as the attention of the major families is diverted and they are worn down by each other, then no one will have any designs on the throne!"
"That's how the Sinclair family has always done things, which is why the conflicts within the kingdom are always ebb and flow. It's just a pity that my skills are not high enough, so I can only take the initiative to become the party that stirs up the conflict."
"Whether it was the battle on the plateau or the battle in the Montero Hills, I paid a heavy price, but as long as it could throw the kingdom into chaos for a while, the price was worthwhile."
"During my father's reign, two battles took place on the plains of Lorraine. He won one and lost the other, but he remained behind the scenes in both battles, and the losses were mainly to the major families. The royal family only lost a little gold."
