Chapter 209 Nightmare
Chapter 209 Nightmare
Li Xiaonuan felt incredibly relieved after reading the letter. What could be more comforting than the soothing words of a child?
With her mood improving, Li Xiaonuan's motion sickness lessened considerably. Of course, psychological factors also played a role. After all, she had eaten the green olives and tangerines that Da Bao and his brother had prepared for her.
When they stopped for the night, Li Xiaonuan got off the carriage in remarkably good spirits. Her unusual behavior immediately attracted the attention of Sang Moyun.
"Miss Li, why are you so energetic today? Is it because Brother Yu's herbal medicine is working?" Sang Moyun asked after circling around Li Xiaonuan.
Looking at the malicious smile on Sang Moyun's face, Li Xiaonuan shook her head helplessly and replied, "The two little ones prepared some green olives and green oranges for me. After eating them, my motion sickness symptoms were greatly relieved."
Hearing Li Xiaonuan's answer, Sang Moyun pouted slightly in disappointment. Looking at Wei Yu's retreating figure as he followed Prince Jing into the inn, she suddenly felt a pang of sadness. Even someone as proud as Wei Yu had humbled himself to personally dig up the thatch roots, only to find they were ultimately useless.
After entering the inn, Li Xiaonuan and the other women were seated in a small courtyard. After Li Xiaonuan bowed again, Princess Qingning arrogantly ignored her. This greatly relieved Li Xiaonuan.
Although Princess Qingning and Li Xiaonuan got along quite well when she was still Chi Yao, that was before Li Xiaonuan knew her true identity. Now that she knew Qingning was a princess, not some random girl, Li Xiaonuan certainly wouldn't try to get close to her anymore.
After dinner, Li Xiaonuan, as usual, went out for some fresh air in the courtyard to dispel the stuffiness from being cooped up in the carriage. Princess Qingning wasn't in the courtyard; it seemed she had gone with some people to find Prince Jing and the others. Sang Moyun was still there, but it was unclear what she was doing inside.
Just as Li Xiaonuan was about to go and chat with Sang Moyun, there was a knock on the courtyard gate. Although there were definitely Prince Jing's men guarding the courtyard, Li Xiaonuan still didn't want to open the gate.
The person knocking stopped after waiting for a long time without a response. Just when Li Xiaonuan thought the person would leave, Wei Yu's voice rang out from outside the door.
"Li Xiaonuan, if you don't open the door for me, I can't guarantee what I'll do once I find my way in." Her voice, laced with threat, carried a hint of anger.
Li Xiaonuan looked up at the sky and thought the moonlight was exceptionally beautiful tonight. But...
She slumped her shoulders listlessly and resignedly went to open the door. The moment the door opened, Wei Yu slipped inside.
After entering the courtyard, Wei Yu turned around and closed the door. Only after making sure the door was closed did Wei Yu grab Li Xiaonuan's hand and walk towards the small side hall in the courtyard.
There was a slight sway at Sang Moyun's door, and then the light in her room went out.
Once they reached the side hall, Wei Yu released Li Xiaonuan's hand. His face held a hint of anger, making his handsome, arrogant features appear somewhat menacing. He stared directly into Li Xiaonuan's evasive eyes, eyes that held a truth she dared not face.
"What do I have to do for you to believe everything I say? Can't you just treat me like you used to? I don't expect you to accept me right now, but at least stop ostracizing me, okay?" After a long silence, Wei Yu finally said, somewhat frustrated.
Even though Wei Yu was filled with immense anger and torment, he dared not do anything too outrageous to Li Xiaonuan. He was afraid that Li Xiaonuan might do something irreversible with Zhou Liufeng, which would be a huge loss for him.
Li Xiaonuan was in a state of confusion, her mind a complete mess. She didn't know how to answer Wei Yu, nor how to refuse him in a way that would make him give up.
Deep down, Li Xiaonuan felt that Wei Yu was actually a very good person. But as someone she could rely on in the future, Wei Yu was far from suitable, because of his status, his family background, and the responsibilities he bore.
Li Xiaonuan is a simple farm girl who only wants to farm and raise livestock, and doesn't want to deal with unnecessary troubles.
“Young Master Wei, you don’t need to do anything anymore. Let’s just maintain the status quo between us. No, I will treat you the way you were when we first met, is that alright?” Li Xiaonuan suggested.
Wei Yu didn't miss the fleeting sense of relief in Li Xiaonuan's eyes, and suddenly felt a pang of sadness. But he was a persistent person, as could be seen from his collecting dairy goats.
"Fine, if you can truly treat me as freely as you did when we first met, then you should accept my advances just like you did back then. Can you do that?" Wei Yu pressed.
Li Xiaonuan was stunned. She looked up at Wei Yu, and the memories of their past interactions flashed back in slow motion. When they first met, she was recklessly bold, not thinking anything through and relying on her limited common sense to explore this unfamiliar time and space.
Back then, her relationship with Wei Yu was as natural and uninhibited as that between friends in her past life. It wasn't until she paid the price for her ignorance time and time again that she slowly became like people now, cautious and fearful of everything.
“Young Master Wei, you should know that my previous actions were extremely inappropriate. Now, I have long realized my mistakes and corrected them. Isn’t that better? Young Master Wei, you are of noble status and should not indulge a country bumpkin like me.” Li Xiaonuan stated the facts clearly.
Wei Yu smiled wryly. He knew he couldn't reason with Li Xiaonuan. But he was determined to persist to the end: "Li Xiaonuan, I will never take back a word I've said. In other words, I promised to be the farmer who stays by your side, and I will. Do you understand what I want now?"
Yes, Wei Yu is that domineering and intolerant of disobedience. Li Xiaonuan felt utterly helpless. Since her transmigration, she had been worrying about everything and living a tiring life. Now she also had to deal with Wei Yu and the series of tedious matters he would bring her.
No, she still has one very important thing to deal with. She's someone who can't even control her own life, so how can she have the time to worry about these things?
“Young Master Wei, I’m going there to my death. I don’t want to have to deal with your family’s troublesome affairs while fighting against fate. So please don’t talk about being my farmer anymore. That’s a nightmare for me. Now, do you understand what I’m thinking?” Li Xiaonuan asked rhetorically.
Wei Yu opened his mouth to speak, but at the last moment he swallowed back the words that were already on his lips.
"Don't worry, with me and Prince Jing here, no one can touch you. Besides, you're not going to your death this time," Wei Yu said dryly.
These words, however, took on a different meaning for Li Xiaonuan: if she left the protection of Wei Yu and Prince Jing, she would be instantly reduced to ashes. Therefore, her journey to the capital was truly fraught with danger.
